Seagate -- No Longer "The Great"

Seagate, as of 1-02-2008, is reverting to a 3 year warranty for "desktop" drives.

Over the last several years, I've bought nothing but Seagate. We have 20-some Seagate drives up and running right now.

I guess those days are over. Thankfully, Western Digital recanted on their "1 year warranty" and went back to 3 years. In most cases, 3 years is probably long enough for a drive to become "obsolete", anyway. WD has made efforts to reduce power consumption -- to the best of my knowledge, Seagate hasn't; so, this might be the end of Seagate in our household. (WD: where are the 1.5 TB drives?)

Currently, I have no reason to distrust Seagate; but, I _hate_ Maxtor, which is now a Seagate subsidiary.

Does this mean that Seagate is selling Maxtor drives to end-users?

I have no idea; but, I'm suspicious...

All I can say is: I still won't buy Maxtor. Historically, in my experience, their failure rate has been remarkable.

Until I know more, Western Digital is now a viable candidate.
